It’s almost as if they aren’t there to reduce bad behavior but to increase revenue.......

I really like how we’re not lying about corruption anymore. We’re just doing it out in the open.

Whenever I see a red light camera story, I feel compelled to bring this up: if you are issued a citation by one, consult the section of the municipal code of the municipality that the ticket was issued by. In many areas, there is no real enforcement mechanism.
In my city, the revised code section for camera tickets specifically says the ticket cannot be reported to the BMV, police, credit agency, bank, or any other legal authority. Fines can only be levied in a civil suit (three tickets later, I still haven’t had a summons) and your vehicle cannot be impounded. Most of the revenue from the tickets doesn’t even go to the municipality that issued it.

I’m proud to say they were found unconstitutional in my great state of Minnesota, so we don’t have to worry about it.
Also, fuck red light cameras. If there’s any justice in the world, all the companies will go out of business.

Most of the revenue from the tickets doesn’t even go to the municipality that issued it.
That’s always been one of my biggest complaints about these.

So if I already have made my “contribution” to the red light camera fund does that mean I am doing my part?

Vote out of office all “officials” who are in favor of red light and speed cameras. If the original officials are out, vote out those that are against removing them.

There was a long article in the Dallas Morning News about how the cameras in TX had cut down significantly on bad accidents, but the biggest benefit they lost was the revenue stream. I laughed while reading because no one even tried to disguise that the money was the biggest concern.
I still don’t have a problem with the cameras, even though I was caught by one, because if you just obey the law, then you don’t get caught. We have so very many yahoos flying through red lights here.

This is my main issue with it. That, and red light cameras have been shown to issue citations for yellow lights, and the companies who manage the cameras have petitioned to shorten yellow lights to make more people run lights, making them dangerous.
Also just noticed that in my original comment, I wrote “red light cameras”. I’m not condoning running reds. I meant speeding ticket cameras.

I have absolutely no idea. The way I understand it (Massive salt grain), there has to be an active duty officer present at the time of the driving infraction to be able to write a ticket for it.

Blurb from an article:
“Using cameras to issue traffic citations is illegal in Minnesota . Minneapolis tried it in 2005, but the cameras were turned off eight months later after a judge struck down the ordinance. The state Supreme Court upheld the decision in 2007, saying it was impossible to prove who was driving from the license plate alone.”

Not until you get caught. But you could give yourself an extravagant salary. It’s not stealing when you pay taxes on it.

That is interesting. I think I can guess where that’s going. The citation is issued to an individual, not a vehicle. You can’t cite the owner of the car unless you can prove he was the one committing the infraction.

I recall reading at one point that the next county over installed a bunch of them, and they were getting something like $14 on every $50 ticket, the rest went to the private contracting firm that they hired to operate the camera .

I’d love to see the bribes and other fun offered to local officials to get this stuff going in the first place. I suppose in this corrupt era, it finally fits.
